Open Source and Internet Commons for Europe

Digital Commons Policy Summit 2026, Brussels

Digital Commons Policy Summit 2026

The Digital Commons Policy Summit 2026 – “Digital Commons and the Open Internet Stack for a Competitive Europe” – takes place on 12 November 2026 in Brussels.

Digital (or internet) commons are a form of commons: information resources and technology that are shared and owned communally.

This year’s question is how to implement the Tech Sovereignty Package:

  • How will the EU Open Source Strategy be implemented, and what role will the Digital Commons play?
  • Is the Tech Sovereignty Package enough to make the Digital Commons a sustainable backbone of the Open Internet Stack?
  • How can the DC-EDIC and the Digital Commoners community collaborate effectively?
  • How is the NGI Commons Strategic Agenda being put into practice?

How do we secure the Digital Commons as a key part of European digital infrastructure?

Validee will take part remotely to gain insights.

Note: since 2016, the bureau has advocated a sovereign European digital infrastructure. It has raised the strategic need, and the need for the Commission’s Directorates-General (DGs) to comply, at events in Brussels and on Futurium, the platform where Europeans discuss EU policies, run by the Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT).

The bureau is therefore pleased to see wider attention (at last) in recent years, for example through the European Commission’s Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative. NGI aims to shape the development and evolution of the Internet into an Internet of Trust: an Internet that responds to people’s fundamental needs, including trust, security and inclusion, while reflecting the values and norms all citizens enjoy in Europe.
